Organizing the laundry room

Being able to have a room dedicated exclusively to laundry is a luxury that not everyone can afford; in most cases, we have to choose to place the washing machine on the balcony, hang clothes inside the house for regulatory reasons or end up ironing in the most unexpected place. But it is also true that sometimes we end up using a room like a loft where we accumulate without order or concert when by an average investment we could optimize its function.

Although there is usually little interest when decorating these spaces because they are not usually shown to visitors, it is essential to plan a good project in order to more easily organize tasks and save time by having everything at hand. The appearance of a room or a corner for laundry should be pleasant and relaxed since several activities are carried out at the same time and it is convenient for us to feel at ease while folding, sewing or ironing. Obviously choosing appliances and container furniture in white tones will broaden the visual sensation, bring light and give more play if those cabinets are going to house “everything”.laundry room

Small touches in pastel or fluorine colors, floral prints on the wall or in textile accessories and some aged-looking objects will be in charge of giving you a certain personality, but the main thing is that our “laundry center” is practical and modular, since Needs may change over time.

There will be cases in which you have to opt for an all-in-one washer dryer with a built-in iron board due to lack of space, and others in which we can design a continuous module where you can organize garments freely and store from cleaning products to towels and footwear, saving us the use of auxiliary furniture in the rest of the house.

To avoid that the laundry room is not always occupied, the best alternative is the folding mobile clotheslines. Among the wide variety of models offered by the market, the so-called double-wing stand out, the vertical towers, the umbrella-style ones that they can be hung on a hanger or a rope, those with a suction cup, the extendable flexography type or those that hang from the radiator; all of them available in large areas or through the internet.

Other accordion-style designs begin to proliferate, allowable to be stored in a drawer or behind the door when folded but surprisingly admit to hanging a large number of garments when deployed. The example of the lower image in natural wood goes beyond its functionality, becoming almost a sculpture or an artistic installation.

Here we offer some simple ideas with which to give a new meaning to useless elements transforming their habitual use into more or less improvised clotheslines: An empty drawer in the kitchen to which the lower shelf has been removed, an easel decorated with wool ropes (ideal for children to learn to hang their clothes) or a painted ladder hooked to the ceiling with several hooks where to place hangers, contributing to facilitate the vertical ironing of shirts, dresses and coats.

We can also “copy” the model of clothesline blinds for blind windows that are folded and whose slats serve to hang clothes, undoubtedly one of the most stylish decorative level but nothing affordable and low capacity

None of these proposals will save us from the obligation to take care of laundry but perhaps they will help the whole family to distribute daily tasks with a better face and encourage us to rethink how to make the most of that indefinable gap.
